FIELD RULE

Do not judge a camera only from a live wide-angle view. Freeze a frame from the real working distance and ask whether the detail needed for an incident review is actually visible.

EVIDENCE QUALITY

Design for useful detail, not just scene coverage.

A camera can cover a large room and still fail the operational question. If the expected question is who removed a lot, the image needs useful detail where hands, faces and labels are visible. If the question is which vehicle entered a pickup lane, the view needs the approach and enough identification detail at the actual distance and lighting conditions.

Resolution is only one part of that result. Field of view, lens choice, mounting height, angle, motion, compression, lighting and the subject's size in the frame all affect what can be recovered later. A high-resolution camera pointed too wide can provide less useful evidence than a modest camera placed for the task.

For vehicle, machinery and industrial auctions, include the approach and departure direction where practical. For smaller lots, focus on the release counter, staging shelf, loading door and the point where staff hand the item to the buyer or carrier.

RECORDING & RETENTION

Prove retention with measured storage use, not a calculator estimate alone.

Retention depends on more than camera count. Resolution, frame rate, codec, scene motion, image noise, variable bitrate behavior and continuous-versus-event recording can change storage consumption. A busy preview room or windy outdoor yard may use more data than a quiet design estimate suggests.

Run the actual system long enough to observe daily storage use and confirm the oldest footage available. Then set retention around the organization's operational need and any applicable legal, contractual or insurer requirements. Audio recording, biometric analytics, notification and retention rules can vary by jurisdiction; configure those features only after the relevant requirements are understood.

Run the test with the building configured as it will be during preview, bidding and pickup. Empty-room camera views can hide the occlusion, glare, traffic and access problems that appear only when the sale is active.
